Getting Organized
Organization is key to being a successful
refunder or couponer. Once you get the process started,
it almost maintains itself!
What you need:
You will need a notebook, plenty of
stamps, address lables and an ample supply of envelopes.
If you plan on trading with others, it is also a good idea
to make up some trading slips. This is just a peice of
paper about the size of a business card that states what
you sent and what you are expecting to receive in return.
Some shoeboxes and cardboard are also great for making
storage boxes for coupons and refund forms. I store my
POP's (proofs of purchase) in clear zipper style bags.
If you choose that method you will need those, too.
Coupons
You will need a place to store your coupons.
Small coupon wallets are often sold in grocery stores,
or you can use a shoebox with envelopes (my method). I
organize the coupons by aisle (dairy, pet, etc.) placing
the ones I plan to use on this visit at the front of each
section. The rest are grouped by product within each section.
Refund Forms
You will need a place to store all of your
refund forms. I use a shoe box with cardboard dividers.
On the dividers, write the month and year for every month
for at least 2 years. Store the forms according to expiration
date. When I receive a new form, I record it alphabetically
in a computer file (a small notebook works well if a computer
isn't available). I record what Q's (UPC's, receipts, etc.)
are needed to complete the deal, the date the form expires
and what the offer is (a free coupon, cash, promo). I go
through my coupon file and note what coupons are available
as well. I take this list (along with my coupons, of course)
to the store with me so I can do some price comparisons.
When you send in the form, record it in
a separate section of your notebook or a separate computer
file. List it by the date you expect to receive it. Forms
should mention the processing time for the offer. Record
the date you sent it, the address you sent it to, items
sent, any additional contact information and what you expect
to receive. If you don't receive it within a week after
the expected date, contact the company.
Qualifiers
Remember to clip the UPC's and Proofs of
purchases from every product you use whether you have a
current form or not. A future refund may become available
for that product. Clip the proof of purchase and write
the product name, version and size on the back. I file
mine in large ziploc baggies with similar products (medicines,
cereals, etc.) If you do have a current form, then clip
the proof, along with the receipt, to the form to prepare
to mail.
